In the realm of men’s fashion, it’s often the small details that make a significant impact. Cufflinks, those tiny accessories that adorn the wrists of a well-dressed gentleman, are a perfect embodiment of this principle. Gold and silver cufflinks, in particular, have stood the test of time as a symbol of refinement and sophistication. And if you’re looking for a way to truly express your individuality, customised cufflinks offer a unique and personal touch to your ensemble.
When it comes to selecting cufflinks, the options are seemingly endless, but silver cufflinks remain a classic choice for the modern man. Silver is renowned for its timeless appeal and versatility, making it a perfect choice for cufflinks. It effortlessly complements both formal and casual attire, adding a touch of understated elegance to any outfit.
Blend In Seamlessly
The beauty of silver cufflinks lies in their ability to seamlessly blend with various colours and fabrics. Whether you’re wearing a crisp white dress shirt or a bright-coloured patterned shirt, silver cufflinks can effortlessly tie the ensemble together. They produce a sense of refinement without overshadowing the rest of your outfit. The durability of silver ensures that your cufflinks will withstand the test of time, eventually becoming heirlooms that can be passed down through generations.
Of course, silver is by no means the only metal that is used for cufflinks. Quite obviously there is also gold, which is a more expensive material, and which can give the impression that the wearer is a man of some importance as well as taste. Gold has a somewhat yellow tone and so needs to be paired with the shirt colour thoughtfully. But there are lots of other options too.
For example, you could have cufflinks made of platinum. It is a precious metal with a colour similar to silver but has the advantage that it doesn’t tarnish. Silver cufflinks need to be polished frequently, but platinum doesn’t. Titanium is another metal which, while more expensive, still has that natural sort of light greyish tone, so will go well with shirts of almost any colour.
There are also metal alloys. These are made from a mixture of metals and are normally polished so that they look like silver or stainless steel. They are on the cheaper end of the scale. Stainless steel is also used for cufflinks and is another metal that doesn’t need any polishing.
Copper And Bronze
But we don’t have to stop there. What about copper? This has a lovely warm reddish/gold colour, but it does tarnish very easily so needs regular polishing. Unless, that is, you like the patina that it develops over time. Another similar option is bronze which produces less of a red appearance than copper. However, it also tarnishes over time.
You can still buy silk knot cufflinks in a wide choice of colours and colour mixes. These are not so easy to put on, because you have to squeeze the knots through the cuff holes, but they are dirt cheap. You can buy a pair for less than a fiver!
At the other end of the scale are gemstones. You can spend virtually whatever you like on cufflinks with gemstones included, but of course they do stand out and give the impression that the wearer is a man of some wealth and importance in society.
Then there are imitation gemstones such as emerald quartz, for instance. These look like emeralds, but don’t cost an arm and a leg.
Consider Pairing
Whatever type and style of cufflinks you choose, you need to consider pairing. While gold or silver colours will go with most other colours, there are some colours that really do not mix well. For instance, if you have a blue shirt you wouldn’t want to wear emerald or emerald lookalikes. There is an old saying: “blue and green should never be seen together” and it is very true. (On that note, it is rather like some men – weather forecasters quite often – who will wear a dark blue or black suit – all very smart – but then pair it with brown shoes! Or worse still, trainers! Seriously. Keep a lookout).
You can also have your cufflinks customised in almost any way that you wish. Many suppliers will provide engraving services so that you could have your initials – or anything else – engraved on the face. Some designers and manufacturers will even produce cufflinks to your own design.
The main point about wearing cufflinks is that, apart from the functional aspect, they can be used to make any sort of statement about yourself that you wish. So, for example, if you are going to a party, or perhaps a Halloween night, you could wear a pair of comedy cufflinks with a witch design on them. Great fun!
Just don’t wear them to the office next morning!
